01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
EZ-Probate was a Vermont-based online probate settlement service founded in 2016 by Byron Batres, a certified financial planner who had been frustrated acting as executor of his own family's estate. Positioned as 'TurboTax for probate,' it let families settle estates with little or no attorney involvement: proprietary software prepared ready-to-sign court documents with step-by-step instructions for a flat fee, versus the $2,000–$50,000 a traditional attorney might charge. Since launch it resolved more than 3,500 cases and saved customers over $30 million in legal fees.
