Metromile (Detailed)
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Metromile was a San Francisco insurtech founded in 2011, the pioneer of pay-per-mile car insurance. Its data-science-driven, telematics-based policies priced premiums on miles actually driven instead of industry approximations, promising average savings of 47% over drivers' previous insurers, with automated claims and a free Pulse driving sensor. It went public in February 2021 by merging with SPAC Insu Acquisition Corp, listing at a valuation above $2 billion. Having raised about $530 million in total funding, it built a licensed insurance entity in 49 states with over 500 million car trips of precision driving data, plus the Metromile Enterprise SaaS claims-automation platform.
02 / Metromile (Detailed) FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Metromile's story collapsed with the SPAC boom that made it. The company listed at over $2 billion in February 2021, at the peak of insurtech euphoria, but its share price fell more than 90% within a year as markets turned on unprofitable insurers and the funding environment tightened. With no path back to growth on its own, Metromile agreed in November 2021 to be acquired by Lemonade in an all-stock deal worth about $500 million on paper - roughly $200 million net of cash, and barely a fraction of the $2 billion valuation and the $530 million it had raised. Stockholders approved the merger in February 2022 and Lemonade closed it on July 28, 2022, paying about $145 million in stock while gaining over $155 million in cash, $110 million in car premiums, 49 state insurance licenses and ten years of driving data. The day after closing, Lemonade laid off 20% of Metromile's team, and four days later sold the Metromile Enterprise platform to EIS - harvesting the assets while Metromile's standalone business disappeared.
