01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

ApartmentJet developed software enabling landlords and tenants to manage short-term rentals.

02 / ApartmentJet FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

ApartmentJet did not fail as an independent company — it was acquired by Expedia Group in October 2018 for a combined ~$54 million with Pillow, and ceased to exist on its own. The ending came afterwards, at the acquirer: after merging ApartmentJet and Pillow with staff from Vrbo into Expedia Group Multifamily solutions (rebranded as the Flex platform), Expedia wound down the entire multifamily short-term rental business in 2020 as part of its pandemic-era reorganization. The decisive factors were therefore post-acquisition strategic re-prioritization, a corporate reorganization during the COVID-19 crisis that crushed short-term rental demand, and the combined unit never reaching meaningful scale inside Expedia.
