01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

DrKoop.com was a consumer health-information website founded in 1997 by former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. C. Everett Koop, launched as Empower Health. It offered medical articles, community forums and e-commerce, betting that Koop's public trust would build the leading online health brand. The company went public in 1999, raising about $88 million, but ran a high-cost, ad-driven business that never reached profitability.

02 / DrKoop.com FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

DrKoop.com was the classic dot-com burn: heavy spending on a health-information portal ahead of any sustainable revenue. The company poured money into brand advertising and a large staff — 185 employees by May 2000 — while the portal generated little income. When the ad market softened in 2000–2001, the burn became fatal: cumulative operating losses reached $207 million, and with no path to profitability, DrKoop.com ceased operations in 2001.
