Observa
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Observa was a remote security startup founded in late 2020 by Rob Picard, who left his job at Robinhood to build it. After a few iterations — starting as a lightweight intrusion detection system for early-stage companies — it settled on a self-service SaaS tool that continuously scanned AWS accounts for accidentally exposed databases and data stores, alerting security teams before outsiders found the exposure. It went through Y Combinator's Winter 2021 batch with a team of one and shut down in September 2021.
02 / Observa FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Observa never found traction in ten months of work. Founder Rob Picard told Failory the product went through several iterations without landing on an idea worth pursuing, never grew beyond its initial group of users, and paid ads bought no real traction. After a year of changing direction, he realized he simply did not want to do it anymore: he stopped taking a salary, spent a month or two searching for the next idea, then returned the remaining money — $370,545.77 of the $462,000 raised — and shut the company down in September 2021. He then cold-emailed Vanta's founder and joined as Security Lead.
