RoomsTonite
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
RoomsTonite was a Bangalore-based mobile-only hotel booking app for last-minute stays, founded in June 2014 by Suresh John of RoomsTonite eBookings Pvt. Ltd. The app offered discounted rates on unsold hotel inventory, initially for same-day bookings and later extended to a 72-hour window, with direct connectivity into partner hotels' reservation systems. It claimed over 200,000 app downloads in its first year and partnerships with more than 4,000 hotels across 325 destinations in India, plus a 24x7 concierge-style assistance service.
02 / RoomsTonite FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
RoomsTonite ran out of money after a promised $1.5 million angel funding round failed to materialize. Operating costs had grown out of control while the promised capital never arrived, producing a severe fund crunch by early 2016. The company decided to wind down around mid-2016; its app disappeared from the Google Play and Apple App Stores and its website stopped functioning. Only a handful of its 90-95 employees were absorbed into founder Suresh John's other company, IDS Next.
