01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
The Grid (thegrid.io) was a San Francisco startup building the world's first AI website builder — a platform that promised to design websites automatically from a user's content: analyzing images, auto-cropping faces, generating color schemes and layouts with no templates. Founded by CEO Dan Tocchini with ex-Google AdSense director of products Brian Axe and Medium's first designer Leigh Taylor, it ran one of the most successful software crowdfunding campaigns ever (founding members paid $96/year) and raised $3.1M seed in October 2014 and a $4.6M Series A led by Jerry Yang's AME Cloud Ventures in December 2014, at $25/month planned pricing. The product launched late and underwhelmed; customer reviews were scathing, satisfaction surveys ranked it near the bottom, and the site faded into dormancy around 2017.
