01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Trover was a Seattle photo-sharing hub for travelers, founded in 2011 by Rich Barton (co-founder of Expedia and Zillow) and Jason Karas. A 'mobile discovery network' connecting people through images of shared places and experiences, it let travelers share travel photos and explore destinations through others' pictures. Built partly from the remains of the failed TravelPost ($9.8 million Series A), it raised $2.5 million in 2013 led by Concur's Perfect Trip Fund. Expedia acquired Trover in July 2016 for an undisclosed sum; Expedia later shut the service down in August 2020.
