01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

iQiyi Smart (爱奇艺智能) was the independently operated virtual-reality equipment company incubated within Chinese video-streaming giant iQiyi Inc., focused on VR headsets. In January 2023 it announced a RMB 400 million ($56 million) Series C round from Qingdao JingKong Group and Verity Ventures. The funding was disbursed in stages with performance clauses; after the company missed predefined sales targets, it received only tens of millions of RMB and fell into a cash-flow crisis. From 2023 it delayed and missed salary payments for over a hundred employees, conducted several rounds of layoffs, and pulled its products from its Taobao, Tmall and JD flagship stores. Former Xiaomi To-B vice president Bai Peng joined as CEO in July 2023.

02 / iQiyi VR FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

The immediate trigger was financial: the RMB 400 million Series C was tied to performance-based clauses, and after missing sales targets, iQiyi Smart received only tens of millions of RMB, causing a cash-flow disruption. Underneath, the VR sector had not achieved mainstream adoption — IDC reported global AR/VR headset shipments fell 44.6% year-on-year in Q2 2023 — leaving the company with unsold inventory and no room to absorb the funding shortfall. By late 2023 employees had gone months without full wages, headcount fell below 100, and the online flagship stores were closed.
