Creator Growth Lab
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Creator Growth Lab was a small subscription analytics web app founded in 2018 by serial entrepreneur Andrew Kamphey - known for BetterSheets (Google Sheets tutorials) and InfluenceWeekly, an influencer-marketing newsletter with more than 6,300 subscribers. The Lab helped Instagram creators grow by themselves: each day creators could log their growth tactics and measure how many followers they gained and how their hashtags performed, then identify the best tactic and optimize it. Kamphey had previously run a side hustle growing clients' Instagram accounts by 2,000 to 5,000 followers a month, but Instagram policy changes ended that method. He invested $5,000 in the Lab, never made a penny, and shut it down in 2019 after realizing there was no real demand for the product.
02 / Creator Growth Lab FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Creator Growth Lab failed for two reinforcing reasons: no market need and dependence on Instagram. Kamphey built the Lab to systematize Instagram growth, but the product never made a penny - creators would not pay for a tool that logged tactics they could track themselves, so demand never materialized. Worse, the business model depended entirely on Instagram's ecosystem: policy changes made the growth methods the Lab was meant to measure obsolete, leaving nothing of lasting value. With no revenue and a disappearing foundation, shutting down was the only sensible outcome.
