Secret
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Secret was an anonymous social sharing app founded by David Byttow, the former lead for Square Wallet, and Chrys Bader-Wechseler, a former Google product manager. It let users post rumors, confessions and gossip anonymously to friends and nearby people, differing from Whisper and Yik Yak by focusing on sharing primarily within one's own social circle. The app exploded in Silicon Valley in early 2014, eventually reaching 15 million users. It raised $35 million in total — a $1.4 million seed from Kleiner Perkins, Google Ventures, Initialized Capital and others, $8.6 million Series A in March 2014, and a $25 million Series B that July — at a valuation around $100 million.
02 / Secret FAILURE REASONS
Why it failed
Secret was not killed by money — it still held a significant amount of its $35 million when it shut down. It was killed by its own design and momentum. Anonymity proved to be the ultimate double-edged sword: cyberbullying flourished, anti-bullying fixes largely failed to stem it, and interest fizzled after a major redesign sterilized the app's identity and made it look like competitor Yik Yak. Co-founder Chrys Bader-Wechseler left in January 2015, and key employees — including Sarah Haider, Safeer Jiwan and Amol Jain — followed, shrinking the team from over 20 to under 10. On April 29, 2015, Byttow announced the shutdown, writing that Secret no longer represented his vision, and chose to return the remaining capital to investors rather than pivot.

05 / AFTERMATH
Lessons
Secret is the canonical case of a product whose core mechanic was its own poison: anonymity created the virality and destroyed the community, and no amount of funding could fix that asymmetry. It is also a rare graceful failure — Byttow returned unused capital instead of pivoting into oblivion, earning credibility for his next act. The lesson: when the problem is the product's DNA, more money buys more pain.
