ExploreVR
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
ExploreVR.net was a virtual-reality business directory founded in 2017 by New York technologist Andrey Norin, aiming to be the 'TripAdvisor for VR.' Built on WordPress (first with the Connections Pro listing engine, then rebuilt on Listify), it let VR businesses such as rentals, arcades, event providers, and content creators list themselves for free while users could find them, leave reviews, and book appointments. The planned business model was a paid membership tier letting businesses stand out in search and publish more events. The whole project was self-financed at roughly $5,000 to $6,000.
02 / ExploreVR FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
In a post-mortem interview, founder Andrey Norin blamed his own inexperience building a business from scratch. He had no market-research skills and created a product that competed head-on with Yelp and Google for the same customers; he had no marketing or promotion skills and tried to 'retrofit' marketing onto a finished product; he underestimated the technical difficulty and became trapped as a webmaster instead of promoting the product; he was product-focused rather than customer-focused and never talked to prospective customers early enough; and his timing was about two years late into the VR hype cycle. Users simply did not care: the few visitors stayed briefly and never returned.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Launched
Andrey Norin launched ExploreVR.net in the summer of 2017 as a specialty directory for VR businesses, built himself on WordPress with a free-listing model.
- Shut down
After a few months with no traction — few visitors, brief stays, no return visits — Norin shut down ExploreVR.net, concluding the project was 'dead on arrival.'

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
In summer 2017 founder Andrey Norin launched ExploreVR.net, a 'TripAdvisor for VR' directory for VR businesses, built himself on WordPress at a total cost of about $5,000–6,000.
- 02
He rebuilt the site from the Connections Pro listing engine to Listify after discovering the first engine could not do half of what was needed, losing 2–3 months of work.
- 03
As the site finally worked, he realized users did not care: few visitors came, they stayed briefly, never returned, and even free-tier signups found the site of limited utility.
- 04
Norin shut down ExploreVR.net a few months after launch, publishing a post-mortem crediting the failure to his lack of business-building experience: no market research, no marketing skills, underestimated technical difficulty, product focus over customer focus, and talking to customers too late.
