Embark Trucks
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Embark Trucks (Embark Technology) was an autonomous trucking company co-founded in 2016 by Alex Rodrigues and Brandon Moak. It built self-driving truck software — machine-learning perception on a safety-redundant computing platform — and was moving real freight for five Fortune 500 companies in the southwest U.S. through purpose-built transfer hubs, logging over 1.5 million miles of autonomous highway operations. It went public in 2021 via a SPAC merger with Northern Genesis Acquisition Corp. II at a $5.2 billion valuation.
02 / Embark Trucks FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Embark ran out of road when capital markets turned their backs on pre-revenue companies just as slipping manufacturer timelines delayed scaled commercial deployment. As CEO Alex Rodrigues wrote in March 2023, the company had explored refining its plan, alternative markets, and finding a buyer, but 'exhausted all alternatives' and could not identify a path forward. Shares had fallen 97% in a year (from $134 to $2.56), and hundreds of millions of investor dollars had been burned without reaching commercialization.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Operations ended
Embark began evaluating winding-up and liquidation options in March 2023; the remaining company was subsequently sold to Applied Intuition.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
On March 3, 2023, Embark announced it would lay off about 70% of its workforce (~230 employees) and shut down its Southern California and Houston offices; the remaining 30% were tasked with winding down operations while the board explored strategic alternatives including asset sale, restructuring, or dissolution/liquidation.
- 02
On May 25, 2023, Applied Intuition agreed to acquire Embark in an all-cash deal with an equity value of about $71 million, integrating its internal tools, data, and software assets; key employees were absorbed and the test-vehicle fleet was retired.
