PhenomeX
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
PhenomeX was an Emeryville, California life-science tools company formed in 2023 by the merger of two cell-biology research system makers, Berkeley Lights and IsoPlexis. Its platforms — the Beacon line of optofluidic systems plus IsoSpark and IsoLight — enabled single-cell analysis for antibody therapeutics, cell-line development, cell therapy and gene therapy, with an installed base of over 400 instruments across the top 15 global pharma companies and most leading US cancer centres.
02 / PhenomeX FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
PhenomeX was a merger of two struggling companies that could not survive the industry-wide slowdown in large capital purchases by research labs. Despite differentiated technology and hundreds of publications, the combined company posted a $50.2 million net loss in Q2 2023 and launched a strategic-alternatives process. With its Nasdaq stock collapsed to about $1 per share, it was sold to Bruker Corporation in October 2023 for $108 million in cash — a fraction of the capital raised over the two companies' histories — and ceased trading.
