GeoCities
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
GeoCities was one of the first free web-hosting services, founded in 1994 as Beverly Hills Internet by David Bohnett and John Rezner. Users built personal web pages in thematically organized 'neighborhoods' such as conservation, fashion, military, sports and travel; at its peak the service hosted 38 million pages and became one of the most visited sites on the early internet. The company went public in 1998, and Yahoo acquired it in January 1999 for $3.57 billion in stock. Yahoo closed the US service on October 26, 2009; GeoCities Japan, run by Yahoo Japan, survived until March 2019.
02 / GeoCities FAILURE REASONS

LA Times (24 Apr 2009) likewise framed the planned closure under CEO Carol Bartz cost-cutting amid a slowing ad market and falling visits.
