The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Vidoop LLC was a Portland, Oregon-based computer security company founded in 2006 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Its flagship product, Vidoop Secure, was a login solution designed to work without traditional passwords: users picked secret image categories during enrollment, and at login Vidoop displayed a grid of images in which the user spotted their categories and derived a one-time access code hidden in plain sight — claimed to resist brute force, keystroke logging and phishing. The grid could carry advertising (ConocoPhillips, Smart USA and others), subsidizing the service for banks, which could use it free if they allowed product placements. The technology debuted at the Web 2.0 Expo in 2007 and was in production at Charles Schwab.
02 / vidoop FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Vidoop's passwordless visual approach did not achieve enough traction to sustain the business. In April 2008 the company's core login technology was spun out into ConfIdent Technologies in Portland, leaving Vidoop as the parent. Just over a year later, on May 30, 2009, Vidoop announced it was going out of business; its fate was recorded as dissolved. The ConfIdent spinoff continued with the core image-grid technology.
