DataRobot
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
DataRobot was a Boston AI platform founded in 2012 by Jeremy Achin, the poster child of the AutoML revolution. It promised to democratize machine learning by automating the building, deployment and maintenance of predictive models, serving over 1,400 enterprise customers at its peak. After a $6.3 billion valuation in July 2021, it pivoted repeatedly, from AutoML to AI Cloud to value-driven AI.
02 / DataRobot FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
DataRobots standalone AutoML proposition was commoditized: AWS SageMaker, Google Vertex AI and Microsoft Azure ML rolled out their own AutoML services, often bundled free with cloud contracts, eroding its value proposition. Enterprise AI budgets shifted toward generative AI, leaving its predictive-analytics focus looking legacy. Repeated strategic pivots confused customers and employees, growth stalled, roughly half the workforce was cut across multiple layoff rounds from 2022 to 2024, the CEO was replaced, and the valuation was marked down to around $500 million by early 2025. The company still operates, but as a shadow of its former self.
