Henri Bendel
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Henri Bendel, founded in 1895, was a New York luxury store known for its flagship, handbags, jewelry and striped shopping bags. Bought by The Limited (L Brands) in 1985, it ran 23 US stores until closing in January 2019 after 123 years.
02 / Henri Bendel FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The brand suffered from years of sluggish sales after its apparel line was discontinued in the 2010s. In September 2018, owner L Brands announced it would close all 23 Henri Bendel stores and the e-commerce site to improve company profitability and focus on larger brands with greater growth potential, such as Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works. The company estimated 2018 revenues of about $85 million and an operating loss of about $45 million. All stores closed in January 2019.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
When a heritage sub-brand posts consistent losses, decide early whether to reinvest or exit.
- 02
Focus capital on brands with greater growth potential rather than spreading it thin.
- 03
Announce closures with lead time and support staff with retention bonuses and separation pay.
- 04
Exit legacy retail responsibly; flagships can carry long, expensive leases.
