01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Pillar was a New York AI-powered fintech founded in 2018 by Michael Bloch (a Stanford Business School dropout whose family faced $500,000+ of student-loan debt). Its app aggregated borrowers' student loans, income and spending data, then recommended and automated the fastest payoff strategy — managing over $500 million of loans for 15,000+ borrowers within six months of its May 2019 launch. It raised $5.5 million in seed funding led by Kleiner Perkins, then pivoted to an eldercare-organising platform in 2020 after COVID-era student-loan relief froze its market, raising a further $7 million for the pivot.
