01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
TrustEgg was a Y Combinator-backed (Winter 2011) San Diego fintech founded by CEO Jeff Brice with co-founder and CFO John Zdanowski. It let parents create a free trust fund for their child in minutes: deposited funds went into a custodial account in the child's name, legally secure until age 18, invested with Vanguard at market rates, and parents could invite family and friends to contribute. After regulatory delays it launched publicly on February 14, 2013 as a licensed product of Summit Trust rather than its own chartered trust company, and later partnered with the National Black Church Initiative aiming at one million children's savings accounts. Its current operating status is unclear.
