01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Tome was a San Francisco AI storytelling platform founded in 2020 by ex-Meta product leaders Keith Peiris and Henri Liriani and incubated at Greylock. Using GPT-3 and DALL-E, it turned a typed prompt into a full visual presentation in seconds — a scrollable, web-native format meant to replace PowerPoint. After a September 2022 public beta it went viral: the fastest productivity tool ever to reach one million users, eventually growing to 20–25 million users, and raising $81 million including a $43 million Series B led by Lightspeed at a $300 million valuation. In April 2025 the founders shut the presentation product down and rebuilt the company as Lightfield, an AI-native CRM.
02 / Tome FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Viral consumer growth never converted into paying business: despite 20–25 million users, revenue stayed a fraction of the $300 million valuation, with the free product attracting students, artists and casual users who would not pay. Business users had one decisive complaint — they could not get their work out of Tome and into PowerPoint, the format their workplaces ran on. In 2024 the founders cut the team from 70 to 7, concluded the real unsolved problem was sales teams' lack of customer memory rather than slides, and pivoted the company to Lightfield.
