Spoil
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Spoil was a Y Combinator Winter 2015 startup offering gifting for the Snapchat generation. Launched in 2014 by a two-person team in Berkeley, California, it ran an on-demand, curated gift service: customers described the occasion and the recipient, and Spoil picked, wrapped and delivered the gift. Four months after launch it had processed 500 gift deliveries.
02 / Spoil FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
The available evidence points to a classic curated-commerce squeeze. Spoil faced Amazon's faster delivery, wider selection and lower prices, while its own model depended on manual curation and complex logistics that were hard to scale without compromising quality. Gifting also has naturally low repeat purchase rates, which hurt customer lifetime value and made high acquisition costs hard to justify. Unable to build a sustainable advantage or reach profitability, the company closed in 2018.
