01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Apprenda was an enterprise platform-as-a-service (PaaS) company founded in 2007 by Sinclair Schuller and based in Troy, New York. Unlike cloud-only PaaS providers, its software ran on top of public cloud infrastructure or inside a company's own data center — or both — letting enterprises run .NET and later Java applications in a cloud-like way behind their firewall. It raised $56 million in total, including a $24 million Series D in 2015 led by Safeguard Scientifics with NEA and Ignition Partners, and counted customers such as JPMorgan Chase (over 2,000 applications), Boeing, AmerisourceBergen and McKesson.
