01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Vango AI was a developer platform that made it easier to evaluate and improve generative visual AI models such as Stable Diffusion. Founded in 2022 in Berkeley by UC Berkeley graduates Eshaan Moorjani and Rajen Dey, it offered a flexible evaluation system so developers using visual AI models at scale could quantitatively assess output quality across thousands of prompts — tracking prompt alignment, anatomical errors and inappropriate content — instead of hacking together ad-hoc tools. It went through Y Combinator's Summer 2023 batch, raised a $500,000 seed round that September, and closed later that year.
