01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Castiron Inc. was an e-commerce platform for independent culinary artisans, formally launched by Indianapolis venture studio High Alpha after operating in stealth mode. Led by co-founder and CEO Mark Josephson, the former CEO of link-management platform Bitly, its software suite helped kitchen-based creators — home and cottage-food bakers and cooks whose numbers surged during COVID-19 — simplify business operations: free e-commerce websites that go live in minutes, back-office tools that funnel all orders into one queue, inventory and delivery management, automated invoicing, and a community for exchanging ideas and tracking local cottage-food laws. The average artisan spent 75% of their time on non-food tasks, which Castiron aimed to absorb. The company only made money when its customers sold something.
