01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Dimien was a Buffalo, New York clean-tech chemical manufacturer founded in 2013 by University at Buffalo chemistry PhD graduate Brian J. Schultz. It used an eco-friendly, water-based process to make chemicals used as additives in high-performance glass, batteries and other products. Its signature development was zeta vanadium oxide (ZVO), a low-cost, high-energy-density vanadium-based cathode material for batteries that, unlike NMC and NCA cathodes, has a low risk of causing fires and avoids nickel, cobalt and graphite. The company was a 43North competition finalist.
