Naya Health
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Naya Health was a US breast-pump startup founded in 2013 by husband-and-wife co-founders Janica Alvarez (CEO) and Jeffery Alvarez (CTO). Its $1,000 Naya Health Smart Pump used water (hydraulics) instead of an air-based suction motor and soft, hospital-grade silicone flanges shaped to feel like a nursing baby's latch, with smart features that tracked milk production via a smartphone app. The company raised about $4.6 million in angel and seed funding (seed co-leads Tandem Capital and Bojiang Capital).
02 / Naya Health FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Naya Health collapsed silently. By late 2018 its support site was down, its social media accounts had gone dark, customers' $1,000 pumps — not covered by insurance — were breaking with no support or replacement parts, and orders placed months earlier were never delivered. A Kickstarter campaign for its smart baby bottle (over $100,000 raised) was full of unfulfilled-order complaints, and the CEO's emails got only auto-replies; investors did not comment. No public statement of the cause was ever made; what is documented is a company that stopped serving its customers and disappeared.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Naya Health raised about $4.6 million in angel and seed funding (funding left unset given conflicting figures). No audited loss figure with disclosed subject, period and basis was extracted — the $4.6M is capital raised, not loss.
