01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
MicroEval was a San Francisco startup in Y Combinator's summer 2012 batch that tried to digitize the painful employee performance-review process. Founders Ryan Jackson, Samantha O'Keefe and Ernie Park launched the beta days before YC Demo Day in August 2012, where they pitched a product that moved the largely paper-based review process online: supervisors could rate employees' productivity and work ethic in a few minutes, with the system prompting employees for additional feedback over time. Early users included Square, Zappos and MIT. The revenue model was simple - the first 100 companies paid $1 per employee. The company raised about $20,000 from Y Combinator. No dated shutdown announcement was found.
