Cribspot
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Cribspot, founded in 2012 at the University of Michigan, was an online marketplace for college off-campus housing. It mapped rental listings and expanded into lease signing, rent payments and property management. A Y Combinator Winter 2015 company, it raised $3.5 million.
02 / Cribspot FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Cribspot struggled to differentiate from incumbents like Zillow and Apartments.com, whose broader reach and brand recognition overshadowed its niche appeal. Local student-housing markets were dominated by personal connections and established practices, and the cyclical rental calendar produced inconsistent cash flow. Reliance on student renters also meant high churn with little room for upselling. In 2018 the founders made the hard decision to shut down, and the team joined Apartment List.
