Openland
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Openland was a San Francisco messenger-for-communities startup founded in 2017 by Yury Lifshits and Steve Korshakov, part of Y Combinator’s Winter 2018 batch. After pivoting from a real-estate marketplace, the team spent nearly two years building a cross-platform community messenger competing with Slack, Discord and Telegram. It raised a $2.3 million seed round in August 2018 and launched publicly in early 2020, attracting more than 250 communities.
02 / Openland FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Openland abandoned a defensible niche for a horizontal market dominated by entrenched incumbents with massive network effects, and it never solved the cold-start distribution problem. The team consumed its limited runway perfecting product craftsmanship while engagement decayed and no revenue materialized. As founder Yury Lifshits put it at closure, the company built an impressive messenger but could not differentiate enough to win market share from the world’s biggest social networks.
