01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Surgical Innovation Associates, a 2016 Northwestern University spin-out based in Chicago, developed DuraSorb, a resorbable synthetic polydioxanone mesh for plastic and reconstructive surgery. The monofilament mesh supports soft tissue during early wound healing and is gradually resorbed within about a year, avoiding complications of permanent implants. The product won FDA 510(k) clearance in 2018 and a CE mark in 2019. In December 2022 Integra LifeSciences agreed to acquire the company for $140 million in total deal value.
