01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
ReelSurfer was a San Francisco video startup founded in 2008 by Stanford students Christian Yang and Neil Joglekar that let anyone clip and share video from any website. Its interactive video system combined digital data processing with voice-to-text recognition to process long-form video and make it searchable, so users could find the crucial '30 seconds' they were looking for, clip it, combine clips into reels and share them with friends. The Visual Effects Society partnered with ReelSurfer in 2009 to power video search on its members' site. The company joined Y Combinator's Summer 2012 batch and raised $880,000 in seed funding from Otto Group, Triplepoint Capital and others.
