01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Forward Health was a San Francisco-based primary-care startup founded in 2016 by Adrian Aoun, an ex-Google engineer. It sold a tech-enabled concierge membership — around $150 per month for unlimited primary care — through upscale physical clinics in major US cities, with on-call physician access and biometric monitoring. After raising more than $650 million, it pivoted in 2023 to unmanned self-service CarePod kiosks intended to replace the clinic visit, then shut down abruptly in November 2024.

02 / Forward Health FAILURE REASONS

Failure factors

Business Insider documents cash burn after the CarePod pivot, weak CarePod traction, March 2024 layoffs with reported <1-year runway, and a difficult fundraising environment preceding the Nov 2024 shutdown (museum 03 already recorded).

Unit Economics Cash Burn

Ex-employees said the company was set to run out of money in less than a year by March 2024 amid CarePod cash burn.

Insufficient Traction

Fewer patients than hoped used CarePods; sales targets missed.

Fundraising

Challenging late-stage healthcare fundraising climate as cash depleted.
