Sunfolding
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Sunfolding was a US solar startup that developed innovative pneumatic solar trackers: instead of motors and torque tubes, its T29 tracker used air pressure to inflate and deflate a flexible polymer bladder to shift panels toward the sun. Launched in 2012 by Leila Madrone and seed-funded by Y Combinator in 2017, it raised more than $32 million and had dozens of operational deployments.
02 / Sunfolding FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Sunfolding was squeezed by compounding shocks: a planned six-month pause in early 2020 to improve testing stretched into nearly two years as COVID-19 disrupted supply chains and steel costs, and in early 2023 a Turkey earthquake disrupted supply of a critical polymer at the heart of its technology. The capital-intensive hardware business could not survive the delays; with existing investors tapped out and no Series C possible, the company shut down in 2023 after exhausting its funding options.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Seed funding raised
Sunfolding is seed-funded by Y Combinator and develops its pneumatic tracker, deploying a field test in Davis, California.
- Operations scaled back
The company pauses operations to upgrade processes and testing; the pause stretches into nearly two years as COVID-19 disrupts supply chains and material costs.
- Closure announced
After a 2023 Turkey earthquake disrupts a critical polymer supply chain and funding options run out, Sunfolding announces it is shutting down.
