01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Nuzzel was a social news aggregation app founded in 2012 by Jonathan Abrams, the founder of Friendster. It synced with users' Twitter and Facebook streams and surfaced the news articles most shared by their connections — 'news from your friends' — with email digests of trending stories and a 'friends of friends' discovery mode. It raised more than $5 million from Andreessen Horowitz, Charles River Ventures, Homebrew, Ridge Ventures, Lowercase Capital, Matter, and SoftTech. In 2019, it was acquired by Scroll, Tony Haile's publisher-partnership subscription startup (terms undisclosed), with Abrams and COO Kent Lindstrom leaving. When Twitter acquired Scroll in May 2021, Nuzzel was shut down on May 6, 2021.
