01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
OKCupid was a free dating site founded in 2003, known for its extensive personality quizzes, matching algorithms, and the OKTrends data blog. In February 2011, it was acquired by IAC/InterActiveCorp, the operators of Match.com, for $50 million; co-founder Sam Yagan continued running its day-to-day operations. It remained active after the acquisition. In November 2012, it launched Tallygram, a social discovery service, which was retired in April 2013 — the only documented shutdown event in its 2013 timeline.
