01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Phiar Technologies was a Redwood City, California AI startup founded in 2017 by Harvard postdoc AI researcher Chen-Ping Yu, later led by CEO Gene Karshenboym (ex-Google Android Automotive). It built an ultra-lightweight Spatial AI engine that let vehicles perceive their surroundings in real time with a single camera on commodity processors, powering an intelligent AR navigation platform (directions overlaid on real-time video / AR head-up displays). It pivoted from a consumer smartphone app to automakers, won POC deals with Panasonic and partnerships with TomTom, Telenav and Qualcomm, and raised $15.3 million ($3.3 million seed via Y Combinator in 2018; $12 million Series A in September 2021 led by State Farm Ventures).
