01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
MosaicML was an open-source AI infrastructure startup, founded in 2020 and led by CEO and co-founder Naveen Rao, that built a platform for organizations to train large language models and deploy generative AI tools on their own data. Its open-source MPT family — including MPT-7B, which had 3.3 million downloads — positioned it as an OpenAI competitor for enterprise AI. The company had raised just under $64 million at a last-round valuation of $222 million. In June 2023 Databricks announced it would pay $1.3 billion to acquire MosaicML, folding it into the Databricks Lakehouse Platform.
