01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Sesame is the flagship smart lock of CANDY HOUSE Inc., founded in June 2014 by Stanford students Jerming Gu (mechanical engineering master candidate from Taiwan), Gary Chang and Sungjune Jang. The world's first instant smart lock, Sesame fits over an existing deadbolt with 3M adhesive tape — no tools, no replacement — and syncs the lock's movement with the phone for exact angle control. Users unlock via the app, a 'knock to unlock' code, or in-pocket Bluetooth; an optional Wi-Fi Access Point enables remote internet unlock and guest access. Launched February 25, 2015 on Kickstarter, it hit its goal in nine hours and raised over $700,000 (with a later $1.4M Indiegogo campaign in 2015). The company is alive and selling new generations, including the Sesame 5 US edition on Amazon.
