01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Shifted Energy was a Honolulu-based energy tech company founded in 2016 out of Hawaii's largest sustainability nonprofit, Kanu Hawaii, and led by co-founder and CEO Forest Frizzell. It built automated, fast demand-response systems — retrofitting electric water heaters with software and controllers into fleets of thermal energy storage assets. Its Grid Maestro platform lets utilities, aggregators and real estate partners turn everyday devices (batteries, solar inverters, thermostats, pool pumps, EV chargers, whole-home meters) into flexible grid-edge power plants, stabilizing the grid and accelerating renewable integration. In 2025 Resource Innovations acquired the company, combining its DERMS technology with Resource Innovations' utility demand-side-management expertise.
