Clip Health
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Clip Health (corporate name Luminostics, Inc., rebranded in 2021) was a California healthtech company co-founded by CEO Bala Raja. Its Clip Platform combined proprietary glow-in-the-dark nanochemistry with a consumer smartphone and AI-based signal processing to deliver rapid, high-accuracy diagnostic tests for at-home, point-of-care and enterprise use. The company's Clip COVID Rapid Antigen Test received FDA emergency use authorization in December 2020, and it later developed the Clip Core analyzer and rapid tests for influenza and multiplexed COVID-19/flu.
02 / Clip Health FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
Clip Health's own 8 May 2023 Gerbsman sale memorandum states FDA de-prioritized its OTC COVID EUA, a 2023 pivot to at-home heart-failure management failed to raise further capital, and the company had no recurring product or collaboration revenue. Buyer Gold Colloid's 19 Sep 2023 BioSpace release separately said Clip Health 'succumbed to financial pressures from regulatory hurdles and decreased demand for covid tests.'
The company-supplied memo says FDA de-prioritization of the OTC EUA drove a failed 2023 pivot.
Fundraising attempts to support further development after the pivot failed.
The asset buyer stated the company succumbed to financial pressure from decreased COVID-test demand as well as regulatory hurdles.
