01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Topix was a Palo Alto internet media company founded in 2004 by Bryn Dole, Rich Skrenta, Bob Truel, Tom Markson, Mike Markson and Chris Tolles, with Tolles as CEO. It began as a news aggregator that categorized stories by topic and geography, then became best known for its anonymous local forums — at one point among the largest entertainment destinations on the US internet, a Quantcast top-100 site. In 2015 it launched entertainment-focused slideshow and quiz sites, Stars and Offbeat, as it pivoted from aggregation to content creation.

02 / Topix FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Topix's anonymous local forums — built for gossip, grievances and rumor — became notorious for defamation and unverified attacks, drawing legal heat and a heavy moderation burden. The company decided news and discussion were no longer what it was about and pivoted to entertainment content, shutting down the local news forums on December 20, 2018. The rump entertainment business was then sold: Publishers Clearing House acquired Topix in September 2019 and redirected the site to pch.com.
