01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Locomation (founded 2018, Pittsburgh; spun out of Carnegie Mellon University's National Robotics Engineering Center) built autonomous trucking technology with a pragmatic twist: instead of full driverless operation, its signature system ran a two-truck convoy — an autonomous truck following behind a human-operated lead truck. Co-founded by Çetin Meriçli, it raised $105 million from investors and signed customers including Christenson Transportation.

02 / Locomation FAILURE REASONS

Why it failed

Locomation was caught in the 2022-23 autonomous-vehicle funding freeze. In March 2023, Pittsburgh media reported the company was closing; CEO Çetin Meriçli denied a full shutdown but confirmed cutting most non-engineering staff 'in the face of economic headwinds' and admitted it had failed to raise additional capital. As VP Finch Fulton put it, the company had the right people and customers but, 'for a number of macroeconomic reasons, was unable to raise money to continue operations and to progress further to be able to get the product ready for commercial operation.' Its assets were disposed of in 2023.
