01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Zenefits was a San Francisco-based SaaS company offering human capital management software for small and medium businesses: HR, payroll, benefits, time tracking and wellness applications. Once one of Silicon Valley's hottest startups, it collapsed after revelations of systematic insurance-law violations, including a $7 million California regulatory fine in 2016, 45% layoffs in early 2017, and a Francisco Partners financing that handed the firm control in 2021. In February 2022 TriNet acquired it for $209 million and renamed it TriNet Zenefits.
