PostRocket
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
PostRocket was a Mountain View startup founded in October 2010 by Murry Ivanoff and Tim Chae. It built a Facebook marketing platform that gave page owners custom content recommendations and insights on what, when and how often to post, using an algorithm to identify effective content for their audiences.
02 / PostRocket FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
PostRocket failed for two compounding reasons. First, poor product execution: CEO Tim Chae admitted the team set unrealistic goals and the product was plagued by bugs and downtime, while frequent changes to the Facebook platform forced constant, resource-draining adaptation. Second, platform competition: Facebook rolled out its own redesigned Insights service, giving page owners the same analytics and optimization for free and rendering the paid service redundant. It shut down on August 15, 2013.
