01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Graphite Docs was a decentralized, encrypted productivity suite built on the Blockstack platform, founded in 2017 by developer Justin Hunter. It offered documents, spreadsheets, file storage and messaging as a privacy-focused alternative to Google G-Suite: user accounts were anchored to the bitcoin blockchain and owned cryptographically by users, documents were encrypted with keys only users held, and data could be stored anywhere the user chose. The product was open source with enterprise versions for businesses, schools, NGOs and newsrooms.
02 / Graphite Docs FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Graphite Docs failed because of bad market focus: when the product gained traction, founder Justin Hunter chose a B2B SaaS model despite the crypto community's preference for a cryptocurrency-based model, and the business never found a sustainable footing. Hunter later moved on to another startup, SimpleID.
