Miga Health
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Miga Health was a San Francisco virtual cardiovascular care company founded in 2021 by Jarrad Aguirre and Andreas (Dre) Limberopoulos, aiming to prevent the next million heart attacks and strokes. It combined a gamified, character-driven mobile app with full-stack clinical services - telemedicine, labs, remote blood-pressure monitoring, prescription delivery and lifestyle coaching - targeting cardiometabolic conditions: obesity, hypertension, diabetes and hyperlipidemia. After a $12 million seed round in 2022 led by Quiet Capital (with Lux Capital, Alumni Ventures and others), it launched with Medicare in seven states covering over 10 million eligible patients, and partnered with Sana Benefits in 2023 to bring its heart-health program to 25,000+ employer members as a $0 Care Partner. In 2024 the co-founders told investors they would not raise more money and would stop running a central part of the business; Endpoints News reported in March 2025 on why the founders decided to quit building.
02 / Miga Health FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Miga Health did not collapse so much as deliberately stop. The founders' decision to tell investors they would not raise more money - and to stop running a central part of the business - was a choice to wind down rather than keep burning capital on a full-stack virtual clinic. The model was ambitious and expensive: multidisciplinary care teams of physicians, nurse practitioners and dietitians, remote devices, labs and pharmacy, all layered on a gamified consumer app, serving cardiometabolic conditions where outcomes take years to prove and reimbursement is slow to materialize. Even with Medicare reach and payor partnerships, the unit economics of full-stack clinical care never converged on sustainability within the runway the founders were willing to commit. Rather than take more investor money to continue, the co-founders chose to quit building - making Miga a rare case of an orderly, founder-led wind-down instead of a forced shutdown.
