OptyFi
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
OptyFi was a Toronto-based decentralized finance (DeFi) startup founded in September 2020 by serial entrepreneur Faisal Qureshi. Billed as an 'AI-powered DeFi' project, it built a multi-chain yield optimizer with a flexible on-chain strategy execution engine that could run multi-step, leveraged yield strategies across multiple protocols - a simplified, automated yield aggregator offering users passive, optimized exposure to decentralized assets.
02 / OptyFi FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
OptyFi gave two reasons for shutting down: a failed $600,000 token sale, which it blamed on its Discord being hacked and community members falling for a fake token sale link; and, more importantly, 'significant and mounting regulatory challenges'. It pointed to the BarnBridge DeFi project claiming to be under SEC investigation, and said it feared the $OPTY token or vault tokens could be deemed securities, or that its vaults could be classified as a mutual-fund-like vehicle. Some community members accused the team of a rug pull.
