01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Tsumobi was a Cambridge, Massachusetts mobile startup founded in 2007 and backed by Y Combinator's Winter 2007 batch plus Draper Richards. It built a J2ME-compatible programming language that processed mobile applications downloaded via URL for Tsumobi-enabled phones, letting developers change applications on the fly with automatic over-the-air updates — an early answer to the painful install-and-upgrade cycle of mobile apps. The team also built a peer-to-peer instant messenger called Skynet. PitchBook records Tsumobi as out of business in April 2016.
