01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Cinkciarz.pl (Conotoxia) was one of Poland's best-known fintech brands — an online currency-exchange platform founded by Marcin Pióro in Zielona Góra that grew through the 2010s into a household name, partly through a seven-year sponsorship of the NBA's Chicago Bulls. Its parent constellation, Conotoxia Holding, built payment and brokerage arms in Poland, Cyprus and the United States, processing billions of zlotys in annual transaction volume. In October 2024 the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (KNF) abruptly revoked the payment-institution license of Conotoxia sp. z o.o., citing failures to safeguard client money and management lapses; customers reported frozen accounts and incomplete transactions. Prosecutors opened a criminal probe into alleged fraud and money laundering, with estimated customer losses climbing past PLN 185 million (about $50 million) and more than 5,000 victims; an Interpol red notice was issued for Pióro, who was detained in the US in May 2026. On October 27, 2025 the District Court in Zielona Góra declared the company bankrupt and appointed a trustee to liquidate its assets.

02 / Cinkciarz.pl (Conotoxia) FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

The collapse was a governance failure that a regulator finally priced in. First, chronic unprofitability: Conotoxia Holding posted no profits for at least eight years, and by end-2023 had accumulated net losses of PLN 191 million (about $48 million) with outstanding loans of PLN 130 million (about $32.5 million) — growth funded by leverage and float, not earnings. Second, regulatory breach: in October 2024 KNF revoked the payment-institution license, citing failures to safeguard client money and lapses in management — an immediately enforceable decision that choked off the group's ability to process transfers, triggering the customer fund freeze. Third, the trust collapse was instant and total: customers — who had routed life savings, mortgage payments and business operating funds through the platform — reported delays stretching from days into months, and prosecutors in Poznań opened criminal investigations into alleged fraud and money laundering. Fourth, the leadership response destroyed any recovery path: instead of cooperating, the company fought regulators publicly (including a stunt announcing KNF-branded toilet paper), insisted customers keep paying for transactions that could not be completed, and its founder fled — an Interpol red notice followed in October 2025. Fifth, the legal endgame: the Warsaw administrative court upheld KNF's decision in March 2025, charges were filed against executives, and the bankruptcy court found the company 'permanently insolvent' — 'the company lacks sufficient assets to repay all its creditors, and its legal situation is essentially incapable of continuing operations.'
